Where I am, getting an opportunity to see a movie in the theaters is not something that comes around every day, as I’ve said before. So, when I was presented with an opportunity to see Watchmen I jumped at it. I’ve read what it was about on the net and of course had seen some of the previews. It looked like a good superhero movie, based on a comic put out by DC Comics. I’m not a fan of DC and never really read them as a child (I prefer Marvel), but they came out with Superman and Batman, both of which has been made into movies and my son loved. So a friend and I planned to take our boys to see this film on Friday. Then I got to thinking, my son freaked out at Twilight, which wasn’t frightening in the least and which I saw before taking him to. How would he react to this film? I elected to leave him at home since I could easily take him to another showing in a week or two. I’m so glad I did!
Let me summarize this film: It’s a dark world out there. The age of superheroes came during WW2 and ended shortly after Vietnam. The cold war is in full swing, with the “Doomsday Clock” at 4 minutes to midnight. An aging superhero is brutally murdered, which leads Rorschach to believe there's a conspiracy out there to discredit and kill past superheroes. He recruits his old friend Dan (aka Nite Owl II) and Laurie (aka Silk Specter II) to investigate and they stumble upon a plot so complicated it’s kinda hard to understand till the very end of the movie.
I need to stress, THIS IS NOT A KIDS' MOVIE!!!!! I knew it was rated R when we walked into it, but what they actually show is closer to NC-17 or not rated R. The opening sequence is a very graphic and brutal murder. About half the movie had sequences that had bones popping out of arms, people burned alive, blood squirting everywhere, arms or heads being severed by saws or meat cleavers. Then there is the 10 minute (or more) sex scene, that reminded me more of a porno than an R rated movie. My friend’s son was sitting on my right and while she held her toddler in her lap covering his eyes, I had to hold my hand over her other son's eyes more often than not due to the sexual content, not to mention the violence scared him... and he’s not easily scared! If we had known it was this bad, we wouldn’t have brought him.
That all being said, it wasn’t a terrible movie and it wasn’t amazing either. It was… ho-hum for me. I kept waiting for it to get to the point, which felt like forever. Some of the scenes were funny, and I grew to really like Rorschach by the end of the film. However most of the movie was forgettable. I enjoyed the film while I watched it, but the minute I left the theater the only thing I could really remember was the “OH MY GOD!” comments I made during the more sexual and violent sequences. For me, that doesn’t make a good movie. I prefer films that have more to the plot than sex and violence, but if you’re a guy, you should love this.
So in short, this wasn’t really my thing. It could be yours if you like empty sex and violence, but it’s not mine.
